Dr. Victor Hugo Escalona Contreras is Agricultural Engineer, Full Professor, and Director of the Postharvest Study Center (CEPOC, www.cepoc.cl) and the Post Graduate School of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Chile (Santiago, Chile). In the last 5 years, he has led research, development, and transfer public projects in the areas of controlled production for leafy vegetables, as well as processing, conservation, and transport of fresh fruits and vegetables. He has developed University-Private Company projects on hydroponic and the application of LED lighting in the production of leafy vegetables and post-harvest technologies. The purpose of this research is to understand how the production or cultivation conditions improve the postharvest life, and the functional and sensory qualities of these products during prolonged storage and transport, reducing their losses during the commercial chain.
